The eminent Korean violinist talks about her life in music
Kyung Wha Chung, one of the world’s great violinists and a two-time Gramophone Award winner, is coming to London to perform a concert of solo Bach at the Barbican. Join her two days earlier, on Monday, May 8, at the Korean Cultural Centre in London for a free talk with James Jolly, Gramophone’s Editor in Chief.
Her first CD for her new Warner Classics contract was released in October last year: the unaccompanied Bach repertoire, which she waited six decades to record before feeling she was ready to climb her so-called ‘Everest’. ‘This release will surely be cherished by her devotees and admired by others for its moments of unique beauty’ wrote Lindsay Kemp in Gramophone’s 2016 Awards issue. (Her forthcoming Barbican and Carnegie Hall recitals in May will be the final time she dedicates herself solely to Bach.)
Now that Kyung Wha has fulfilled a lifelong ambition and also returned to the stage following a 15-year hiatus, this evening at the Korean Cultural Centre will be a moment to reflect on her illustrious career, and to talk candidly with James Jolly about her experiences as a child prodigy, her temporary retirement, and her comeback to the recording studio.
The evening starts at 6pm and takes place at the Korean Cultural Centre, London WC2N 5BW. To reserve your place, please email rebecca@nickythomasmedia.com with the number of tickets you require (places are limited – 20 have been set aside for Gramophone readers).
